Reach by Natalie Lydick

Are you afraid?
This ache knows me.

Fear lives in my stomach,
With electric eel tendrils grasping
At my brain,
Inculcating the headache.

The world is tempestuous,
Today,
And yesterday,
And God, how long now?

We are a sea of heads
Bobbing out of the brine,
Gasping for air, succumbing
To the ceaseless swallow.

I’m holding (my breath + your hand),
But I falter.
And you falter.
And aren’t we all at fault?

I’m waiting on the beam
Of sunshine that breaks
The unabated upheaval.
The drear.

We are straining to see
With our burning eyes.
Submerged and hurled about,
And each floundering.

I’m holding,
I’m slipping,
Don’t you let go
