Impossible Dream by Hailing Liu

February 7, 2021 Cortney Philip

Artist Statement: “Impossible Dream” is a piece of work with an idea of intercutting car commercials to discuss cultural surfaces and their meanings created by the media. When watching various car commercials online, I noticed the strategies of selling cars are always about meeting desires or expectations of masculinity and normative success. By combining clips grabbed from different car commercials as well as adding my own compositions, I create an absurd fantasy with ambiguous narration as a reflection for audiences to examine meanings conveyed by the media. The background music is also grabbed from a car commercial which uses the song, “The Impossible Dream,” originally composed by Mitch Leigh & Joe Darion.

About the Artist: Liu Hailing is a Chicago-based artist mainly working on digital moving images. Beginning with using different softwares to make video compositions, Hailing always plays with constructed and changing meanings within our living world in humorous, dark and absurd ways.

You can find more of Hailing’s work on her website and on her Instagram.
